A new year is coming up fast, and that is a great time to make a new start! Why not consider making some cosmetic changes to your teeth? Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, and improving it cannot only improve your look, but your outlook as well. One of the easier ways to spruce up your smile is through the use of dental veneers. Veneers are custom-made in a dental lab to fit your teeth, and are shaded to match your smile. To place a veneer, the dentist removes some of the enamel from your tooth, and then takes an impression of it. That impression is sent to a dental lab, where your permanent veneers will be crafted. In the interim, you will be given a temporary veneer. When the time comes, the dentist will place the permanent veneer on your tooth with dental cement.

Because tooth enamel must be removed to place a veneer, you should keep in mind that the process is irreversible. So, it is important that you take proper care of your veneer. Your veneer can last ten to fifteen years with the proper care.  That care includes brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and flossing once a day. Remember: your veneer will protect the front of your tooth, but not the back. That area is still vulnerable to tooth decay. If you are in the habit of clenching or grinding your teeth, chewing on ice, pens or other objects, be aware that those things can damage your veneer. You will need to watch what you eat, and talk to your dentist if you grind your teeth. The cement holding your veneer to your tooth can wear away over time, and your veneer could fall off. Your veneer can be stained, so you should keep that in mind when planning your menu.
