Bad Breath and Your Smile

If you are currently finding yourself struggling with the effects of bad breath, you are not alone. There are a variety of issues that can affect your breath, and today our Bruce Brumm team in San Diego, California, would like to give you the information you need to overcome some common oral health conditions that can keep you from socializing with ease.

Tonsil Issues: Your tonsils create little “stones” in their pockets out of mucus and oral bacteria that live in the mouth. Tonsil stones smell foul and resemble cheese. You can prevent these stones by keeping your mouth as clean as possible. This means brushing and flossing every day to remove bacterial debris. Flush out any stones you already have with your toothbrush, a cotton swab, or a water flosser. Gargling daily with a warm salt water solution can also get rid of the bacteria and mucus out of tonsil pockets.

Bacterial Issues: Because millions of bacteria live in the mouth, they readily build up into a sticky film called plaque, which coats your teeth and tongue. As bacteria colonize, it gives off unpleasant smells. You can put a stop to this by brushing your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes and cleaning your tongue. You can use a toothbrush or tongue scraper to clear the bacteria off the tongue from the back to the front. Floss every single day between your teeth and gums to remove bacteria. Rinse well after loosening all that oral debris.

Tummy Issues: If you suffer from acid reflux or ulcers, you may be burping up foul smells. To help you counter these effects, you can take antacids or acid blockers found over the counter at your local pharmacy. Taking probiotic supplements or eating yogurt can also help the “good” gut bacteria to counter the bad.
